Bobby Sands

Bobby Sands Remembered (May 4, 2012)
On this the 31st anniversary of the death on hunger strike of Bobby Sands,
his friend and comrade, former IRA prisoner Colm Scullion from South Derry,
recalls first meeting Bobby while on remand in Crumlin Road Jail.
Colm had been injured in a premature explosion at the time of his arrest in October 1976
along with his fellow comrade Tom McElwee, the ninth republican to die on the hunger strike, on 8th August 1981.
Colm was later sentenced, and in the H-Blocks met up with Bobby again and there in H-3,
during some of the darkest days of the protest, they shared a cell.
Here, the quiet South Derry republican speaks about Bobby Sands’ humour,
his humanity and his concern for especially the younger prisoners
as the blanket men entered their fifth year of beatings on the protest for political status.

Wilson Greatbatch, a professed “humble tinkerer” who, working in his barn in 1958,
designed the first practical implantable pacemaker, a device that has preserved millions of lives,
died on Tuesday at his home in Williamsville, N.Y. He was 92.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Anne Maciariello.
Mr. Greatbatch patented more than 325 inventions,
notably a long-life lithium battery used in a wide range of medical implants.
He created tools used in AIDS research and a solar-powered canoe,
which he took on a 160-mile voyage on the Finger Lakes in New York to celebrate his 72nd birthday.

We Will never forgetMarch 16th is the anniversary of Rachel Corrie's death

Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003)
was an American member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).
She died whilst acting as a human shield to prevent
the demolition of the home of local pharmacist Samir Nasrallah.
The ISM said she had placed herself between the bulldozer
and a wall near Nasrallah's home.
Members of the ISM said that she was killed by the Israeli bulldozer
and that there was nothing to obscure the driver's view.
Rachel was a student at The Evergreen State College.
She had taken a year off to travel to the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada.

Bloody Sunday - Domhnach na FolaAs thousands of Civil Rights marchers set off from the Bishops Field in Creggan
just before 3 o'clock the mood was upbeat.
The sun was shining, the air was crisp and the atmosphere was akin to a carnival.
The march had been banned by the Stormont government but there was no sense of fear as the marchers,
singing and chanting, wound their way down from Creggan and through the Brandywell and Bogside.
It was common knowledge that the IRA had withdrawn from the Bogside.
As the march reached the Army barricade at William St the great bulk of protesters followed the platform party on a lorry.
A minor confrontation occurred at this barricade but by the standards of Derry in 1972
it was low key and as 4.00pm approached it was petering out.
At approximately 4.07pm.
the order was given for the 1st Battalion the Parachute Regiment to begin an "arrest " operation.
3 minutes later soldiers of the Support Company began firing.
